Recently I saw number of post about purchasing twitter followers from different online services. I was curious if it's possible to convert them to something (lead, sale or at least visitor). So I decided to do little experiment.
The goal: to measure CTR of your twitter message from followers accrued by some automatic process (following people in you niche hopping they will follow you back)
I've created new twitter account. The niche I selected was "yoga". I write couple yoga related tweets... nice yoga related avatar ... Being a programmer, it was not that hard to write simple application to follow people according the some keywords (yoga for example :-)).
In short after 24 hours (I didn't run too many automatic queries trying to to be banned by twitter) I had following twitter stats:

Not I didn't unfollowed people the not followed me. So it looks like it's not that complicate to gain big number of followers. The big question again - is it possible to convert them to something (at least traffic).
Now when I had 347 followers is the time to test how they will respond to my twitts. To test it I simply creates new twit, something like "The most interesting book about Yoga I ever read - http://bit.ly/BOOKLINK". As you probably know you can see clicks stats of bit.ly urls so it was easy for me to control how many from my followers will come to read my message.
Guess how many clicks did I get from my 347 followers? After 24 hours that I published my twit the bitly stats show: 1 click !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll repeat: 1 click from 347 followers !!!!!!!!!!!!!
My conclusion is the twitter followers cost nothing (at least if they are following you just because you are following them).
